Menopause is the phase when female body becomes infertile, where menstruation cycle ceases permanently and ovaries cease to produce eggs. However, any woman is considered to be entered in truly menopausal phase only when she had skipped period (menstruation cycle) for a period of twelve successive months.

Premenopause and its duration

So, premenopause is broadly termed as the phase when woman starts experiencing varying changes in her menstruation. Typically premenopause starts in mid forties; however, as every woman has unique anatomical and physiological features along with diverse lifestyle from others, this onset varies considerably.

There have been numerous cases when woman at early age of 25 and even at an age of 70 exhibited premenopausal symptoms. The average span of menopausal phase varies within a range of 12 months to 6 years.

Symptoms during premenopause

During menopause hormone levels secreted by reproductive system start fluctuating to accommodate the changes in ovaries. In particular, estrogen levels start dropping which results in irregularity of menstruation periods making them shorter or longer. Besides this, the decline in the levels of estrogen leads to multiple symptoms, popularly known as PMS or pemenopausal symptoms.
