The gravity of symptoms of premenstrual syndrome is quite varying. While many women suffer from the severe symptoms in this trying phase, for few women, these symptoms are mild and subtle and they even don’t notice them. The same goes with the duration; it varies too from woman to woman.
Whether the symptoms are severe are not, whether they are long-lasting or not, there has been continuous efforts from different medical organizations, research group to uncover this mystery that more than 70 to 90 percent women go through and offer more comfort in this trying phase by reducing the gravity of symptoms.
Recent study carried out to judge the effect of Vitamin E and essential fatty acids on PMS suggests that perhaps this combination can prove vital and beneficial to calm down the severity of the symptoms of PMS.
The Study
The study has been carried out on the selective group of 120 women suffering from PMS syndrome. These women were then given one to two grams of specific diet supplement that contained vitamin E, polyunsaturated acids, linoleic acid and oleic acid (essential fatty acids) or placebo everyday for the duration of six months. After six months, their PMS symptoms were measured by taking the help of PRISM (Prospective Record of the Impact and Severity of Menstruation) calendar.
The conclusion
The researchers derived the conclusion that women who were placed on diet supplements witness significant decrease in their PRISM scores. Moreover, women that had given higher quantity witness more significant decrease in their PMS symptoms. There were no side effects and levels of cholesterol or prolactin remain unaltered.
However, researchers agreed that the said study is not fully comprehensive and in-depth research is required in this direction to confirm their findings.
